2002 Ducati 749R  SOLD 2022

In 2001 Ducati decided to get serious about winning the World Supersport Championship, (WSS) replacing the 748SPS with a completely new bike, the 748R. Many believe the R was little more than a makeover, but not so, it was a clean-sheet build.

Under WSS rules manufacturers had to race what they sold, meaning the road-going 748R offered here is the exact same spec bike as fronted the starters flag at the first round of the 2002 WSS Championship. Using the 996RS WBK frame allowed the 748R a much larger air-box which in-turn allowed use of massive 54mm throttle bodies and a completely new ‘shower’ fuel injection design, previously only seen in F1 racing. The engine also received a significant boost in power, up to 106HP (79kW) thanks to Titanium rods & valves, higher lift cams and other internal design benefits.

More power and less weight, the WSB frame was itself lighter than the previous 748, but the R also benefited from carbon components including a stressed member air-box and other lightweight items. The suspension was uprated to fully adjustable 43mm Öhlins up front, and Öhlins 2-way rear shock, and cast Marchesini 5 spoke wheels. When released the 748R was reviewed as a diminutive, knife-sharp handler that was probably more suited to the track.  

This example is build #1001 and while not in showroom condition, the asking price more than compensates. Showroom original versions command around 25k & rising, so this example is ideal for riding & using without concern of getting a few stone chips, and at the asking price has plenty of margin should someone wish to undertake a cosmetic restoration sometime in the future. Located in NSW this bike is fully complied and ready for immediate registration.
