1975 Ducati 860GT

$8,471.10

 Product Description

1975 Ducati 860 GT  SOLD 2020

Designed by famed stylist Giorgio Giugiaro, father of the DeLorean, to the casual observer the 860 GT may have appeared as nothing but a cosmetic make-over of the 750 GT, but there was much more to the new 860. The entire machine was redesigned and restyled with the intention of making it more appealing to the US market. The engine also underwent considerable modification to improve reliability and minimise maintenance. There were a large number of engine updates for the 860-engine compared to the round-case 750, notably the bevel-gear camshaft drive and lubrication system was significantly improved for reliability. Destined for the US market the 860 had to meet their stringent emissions controls, so to ensure the new model was no less powerful than its sportier 750 sibling, engine displacement was increased by 116cc.

Although history was unkind to the 860 GT, some of its misfortune was due to unfortunate timing, like coinciding with a global slump in motorcycle sales and being only kick-start, something not favoured by the US when almost everything out of Japan offered an electric leg. As a consequence, the more European-inspired 860 GTS soon replaced it, and next was the GTE with electrical start.

Today however, the 860 GT’s time has finally arrived, as modern motorcycles adopt a more hard-edged style the Ducati 860 GT has begun to look more contemporary, something few 35-year-old motorcycles can emulate.

This striking 1975 example was delivered new in New Zealand and imported into Australia in 2010. It’s had three owners since, the second of which undertook a bare fame restoration before selling to the last owner who had the bike on NSW club registration up until March 2020. Receipts are on hand for almost $14,000 spent on the restoration, and prior to selling the last owner spent another $1,500.00 having the bike checked over by legendary bevel specialist, Desmo HQ.
