1983 Ducati 900S2
The Ducati 900 S2 represents the final evolution of Ducati’s classic bevel‑drive Super Sports. Introduced in 1982 as a replacement for the famed & highly loved 900SS, the S2 was designed to modernise a legendary platform via introducing a new Pantah styled fairing/screen & 80’s squarish tail cowl, while also preserving its SS racing DNA. At its heart is Fabio Taglioni’s 864 cc air‑cooled, bevel‑shaft, desmodromic L‑twin, an engine revered for its sound, character, and mechanical elegance.
The S2 entered production as the company was on the threshold of permanent closure. It would be another two years before Cagiva saved the now famous ‘household name’, but throughout the S2’s production it was a company clawing on to survival, and bikes were assembled with whatever was on shelves or spare parts stores. Despite being fitted with electric-start engine side cases, this example left Bolognia kick-only, as the original wiring loom has no start circuitry, nor the engine contain starter gear assembly or any witness marks of ever containing any. Similarly, its carbys are circa 1975 40mm smoothbore with ‘jigglers’ as opposed to choke variants as fitted to all 79-81 SS’s, such was the disarray at Bologna.
Only 1,236 S2’s were ever manufactured for the global market between 1982 and 1984, making them the smallest production run of all Bevel-drive Supersport models. Despite Bevel’s remaining enormously popular in Australia, we received only 75 examples in 1983; making this one of the very last ever kick-start Bevel Sports bikes produced.
