1971 Ducati 750GT Pre-production
The 1971 Ducati 750 GT pre-production model marked a pivotal moment in Ducati’s history, introducing the brand’s first 90-degree V-twin (L-twin) engine designed by the legendary Dr. T, Fabio Taglioni. The success of Dr T’s latest creation became a signature feature of Ducati motorcycles for decades, known for its balance, performance, and distinctive sound.
The 750 GT also represented Ducati’s transition into the larger displacement market, competing with British and American bikes. Its success laid the groundwork for the legendary 750 Super Sport, aka Greenframe, and Ducati’s racing triumphs, especially at Imola in 1972. As a pre-production model, it symbolizes the beginning of Ducati’s modern performance legacy.
Of the few pre-productions still remaining, this very early example, number 48, is believed one of the first two taken to the USA by the Berliner brothers for testing and evaluation by Ducati legends Phil Schilling and Cook Neilson, for Berlina to decide as to whether or not the new, larger capacity, Ducati was worthy of homologating the US market.
After homologation assessment the bike travelled the US dealership network for marketing & promotion purposes before being sold to a lucky Buffalo NY enthusiast. Clearly loved, its first owner retained the bike for the next 28 years, selling it in 2000 to Dallas (TX) Ducati dealer, Randall Brock. Following Brock’s death in 2017, his neighbour purchased the bike and commissioned highly respected restorer Big D Cycles to perform concourse restoration of this extremely rare motorcycle.
At completion the bike was shown at various concourse display events around the country, and then purchased by the current owner in July 2019, imported by Raidermoto and has since taken pride of place in the owners’ collection. Despite quarterly starting, warm-up and gearbox circulation, the bike has not been ridden on Australian soil.
