1955 Beta 175 Milano – Taranto

$15,000.00

Description

The 1955 Beta 175 Milano-Taranto represents a significant chapter in post-war Italian competition motorcycling, created during a period when long-distance road racing served as the ultimate proving ground for engineering excellence. Developed directly from machines intended for competition, the Beta 175 MT was purpose-built to contest the legendary Milano-Taranto endurance race, one of Europe’s most demanding and prestigious events of the era.

Powered by a 175cc single-cylinder two-stroke engine paired with a four-speed gearbox, the Milano-Taranto specification was renowned for its exceptional performance and reliability. Contemporary accounts regarded it as among the fastest and most dependable 175cc motorcycles of its time, capable of achieving speeds of approximately 130 km/h, an impressive figure for a lightweight endurance racer of the mid-1950s. Its mechanical simplicity and robust construction made it ideally suited to the sustained high-speed demands of long-distance public-road competition.

This machine was produced by Società Giuseppe Bianchi, founded in Florence in 1905 as a manufacturer of handcrafted bicycles. In the immediate post-war years, the company evolved into a true motorcycle manufacturer under the Beta name — derived from the initials of its founders, Enzo Bianchi and Arrigo Tosi. By the early 1950s, Beta had established itself as a serious competitor, progressing from the innovative ITAL-JAP 125 to the more powerful and race-focused Milano-Taranto 175, a model derived directly from factory competition machines.

Of particular historical importance, the Beta 175 MT embodies the raw, uncompromising character of Italian road racing before the transition to closed circuits. Built in limited numbers and intended primarily for competition use, surviving examples are now exceptionally rare, especially those retaining originality and documented provenance.

This example is presented in superb, fully original condition, complete and documented, and retains its Florence registration plate along with its certificate of origin. Its authenticity, originality, and clear historical context make it a highly compelling acquisition for the serious collector or institution.

Offering a direct connection to Italy’s golden era of endurance road racing, the 1955 Beta 175 Milano-Taranto stands as an evocative and historically important machine — a true artifact of mid-century Italian engineering, competition ambition, and craftsmanship.
