Honda has always been one of the world’s best sub-100cc bike & engine builders, from commuter bikes to factory works racers. The company’s founder started with 50cc Grand Prix bikes, and as the brand grew so too did the size of the bikes. In 2004 however, Honda went back to the future, releasing just 440 copies of one of the best 49cc bikes ever made – the Honda CB50R, otherwise known as the Dream. Built as a replica of the 1962 RC110, this design is a very faithful recreation of the bikes that toppled the British & Italian dominance in Grand Prix racing. Many consider it one of the most beautiful bikes the famed marque has ever been built.

New, the Honda CB50R cost circa $8k AUD, and as the years have rolled by their values have never receded. The sewing machine engine revved to almost 14,000rpm, and produced about 7 hp. Weighing a diminutive 70kg, the HRC enhanced power plant made good use of its 6-speed gearbox, punching well above its weight limit.

Be aware, the CB50R is vastly different to the road-going Dream 50R, receiving all sorts of HRC bling like race-spec cams, valve springs and pistons, and a lightweight generator. The CB50R is race-use only; there’s no battery, no kick-start. Starting is by traditional push & bump, and for those after more power, HRC has made a range of upgrade and race spec parts that will have you scorching the tracks.
