Bimota’s SB8R was designed for the famous marque’s return to World Superbike racing after an 11-year hiatus. Basically a homologation special, the SB8R features a unique lightweight composite frame constructed of hollow aluminium section upper spars and machined carbon-fibre lower side-plates that, together with a stressed engine, produces incredible rigidity and a kerb weight of only 185kg.

Powered by Suzuki’s fabulous TLR1000R engine, Bimota carried out significant up-specing of the 996cc 90-degree V-Twin motor, including their own larger throttle bodies and Bimota’s Radial Fuel Injection system, a world first, as the SB8R was at that time the only production bike produced with such advanced racing technology; The programable ECU shower injection allows the rider to modify fuel enrichment on the fly.

In 2000 the SB8R was considerably lighter that its main WSBK opposition, the Ducati 998R, and with 138HP and 93Nm of torque, the mid-range power delivery is often referred to as ‘devastating. In the hands of Superbike legend Anthony Gobert, riding an almost standard SB8R, the bike finished 12th at round 1 of the 2000 WSBK race at Kyalami, South Africa, then two weeks later would record a heat 1 win at the Australian round at Phillip Island. A few weeks later the company would disappear into insolvency.

This particular SB8R is the only known example to have been built to order in a one-off Tricolor livery and Bimota Corse titanium exhaust . With approximately 7,000k’s use from new this is a spectacularly original piece of what was the last model produced by the original company.
