1995 Ducati 916SP SOLD 2021
One of the rarest of all 916 models is the 916SP. The SP (Sport Production) was Ducati’s first homologation special built with an array of high-end modifications, most of which are not visible due to being contained inside the engine. Externally the differences are subtle and easily replicated, which makes finding a genuine example very difficult, while finding one with full and unquestionable provenance means striking gold!
Externally the SP had a monoposto single seat with white racing fields, a carbon fibre front guard, (if you were lucky), Ohlins rear shock, Brembo cast iron full floating front brake rotors, steel braided front brake lines (SP2 & SP3 had rubber brake lines), an aluminium rear subframe, P8 ECU, 2 x 50mm throttle-bodies with 2 injectors p/cylinder, flattened valve clearance inspection caps (sans “DESMO 4V DOHC” raised casting), 14 tooth front Sprocket, 2 RPM pick-up sensors located near the alternator cover, and a unique 45/50 exhaust system.
Internally the SP had Pankl steel H-section con-rods, lightened crankshaft counterweights with heavy (Mallory) metal inserts, 21 mm gudgeon pins instead of 20mm, 94mm cylinder barrels with thicker muffs to allow for larger (955cc) over-bore, crankcases had larger 102mm bore opening to accommodate the larger SP barrels with thicker muffs, lightened flywheel, valves enlarged to 34/30 (from 33/29mm), G-spec inlet camshafts, & A-spec exhaust camshafts.
The SP offered here has been verified by the factory and was the first SP delivered to Spain in 1995, and likely the first of the very limited 401 built. This bike was delivered well in advance to the official release due to the owner being a Ducati VIP customer. The bike was signed out of Bologna 2 May 1995, and delivered to the original owner on 15 May 1995 by Juan Antonio Ferrater, owner of Ducati Barcelona.
The present owner discovered the bike in August 2012 while holidaying in Spain. At that time the bike sat on display on a mezzanine level within the Dealership (see photo), and later engaged Raidermoto to finalise the purchase and shipping back to Australia. Fully complied the bike has seen very little use and has recently undergone a full service, all fluids drained & replaced, new cam-timing belts, new wheel bearings, new Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa tyres.
This 916SP has travelled only 6,800k’s and retains full Spanish documentation from Ducati Barcelona, has the original tool kit, both keys attached to unique individual key cases, full records and documentation of importing, compliance and ownership.
